EP 489: Amy Scott – 6 Questions to Ask Your Partner About Finances

What led to your interest in personal finances and budgeting?

My background is in public health. It wasn’t until my husband and I had some financial challenges that I got interested in finance. I had two sons close in age, and I was given six weeks off from work. I was stressed about going back to work. He said I could take more time off, because we were doing well enough for me to stay at home. When we dug into our finances, we realized we didn’t have enough for me to not work. I asked myself what we could do differently to make this possible. What we realized was the gap was a lot smaller than we thought. As soon as we had that clarity around our finances, it was game on. It brought us together around the same goal. We started making more money, and I realized I liked the budgeting piece. Friends asked what we did, and I started helping others.

Why are finances one of the leading causes of marital/relationship stress?

We come into relationships with different beliefs, expectations, and experiences around money. One person might have a credit card with points, and the other always used cash. That can cause stress in the relationship. One might like spreadsheets and the other doesn’t want to talk about money. That can cause conflict. If they’re sharing finances, one person is usually managing the bills and the other might not be part of the bills, but they’re still spending money. They need to get on the same page.

What are the six questions you can ask your partner about finances to understand how they think?

  1. What messages did you hear about money growing up?
  2. What does having money mean to you? (security? freedom?)
  3. What does it mean to be ‘doing well with money’? (emergency fund, going on vacation? Getting out of debt?)
  4. Is there anything you wish we could do or have, but you don’t bring it up, because you’re afraid we don’t have the money (and you’re afraid of my reaction if you do bring it up)?
  5. What’s your number one worry when it comes to money?
  6. If you received fifty thousand dollars unexpectedly, what would you do with it?

Do you have a resource that couples can use to have clarity and harmony around their finances?

It’s called three steps to up-level your budget. It includes practical steps to take around budgeting and money. You can find it on my website here.
