How is tango a metaphor for harmonious and passionate relationships?
Tango is a reflection of the relationship dynamic. It’s purely nonverbal. You have to communicate without words. If two people are not on the same page, you’ll see that within five to seven steps, as they stumble and bump into each other. When they are in sync, magic happens. It’s passionate. It’s important to have a leader and a follower in dance.
Why is non-verbal communication so important in tango and how does that give us insight into communication in relationships?
So much of communication is nonverbal. They don’t realize how much information they are transferring to their partners through non-verbal communication. You can feel tension and openness when you’re in someone’s arms. Once people experienced that, they realized they were communicating like that off the dance floor.
What are common places where communication breaks down in the dance, and how do they apply to romantic relationships?
I can see how relationships break down through people’s dance. Where you put your attention shifts how you position your body. The partner can feel the shift in attention and subtle things when they are out of alignment.
Trust, active listening, and giving and receiving feedback are the key areas of communication breakdown on the dance floor and at home.
How can dancing tango help in improving your relationships?
Dancing is a partnership. The only way it works is if you work together.
As a single person, there are things one must prepare mentally to come into partnership. You have to be ready to be fully present. It can make you acutely aware of where your trust issues lie. If you’re following in the dance and don’t fully trust the other person, it immediately shows up in your body.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
These types of experiences (in Tango dance) help you accelerate your relationships. More people are kinesthetic learners than they realize. Through dance, they heal, become more open to give and receive love and prepare for being in partnership.
