EP 516: Simon Bailey – Ignite the Power of Women

Were you afraid to love again after having been divorced? And if so, how did you get past that fear?

When I met my wife, Jodi, we talked for hours, because my therapist said I needed fifty to one hundred contact hours. She was so warm and kind, and it helped heal the nervousness.

What motivated you to see a therapist?

My attorney said I needed a therapist. I didn’t want to go, but she said, “Whatever you don’t deal with will deal with you.” So, I worked with a therapist and processed my past to find my way forward.

Men often feel therapy makes them less masculine. Or they feel they’re not doing it for themselves but to shut the woman up.

Why are many men afraid to open up and be vulnerable with women?

It’s scary to let down our guard. It’s a dance to try to figure out where it’s going. Men release the need to be right and in control. They realize they don’t need all the answers. They also realize that they have selective hearing instead of really listening.

You speak about “the imprint of your father.” Whats the significance of a man’s relationship with his father, and why should men to pay special attention to that relationship?

My father adored my mom. He provided and took care of my mom. He neglected to tell me he loved me. He showed love through his actions but not his words. On his deathbed, he did say he loved me and believed in me.

I started to tell my kids I loved them. Because my father shifted the conversation, I was able to change MY conversation.

When I first started dating Jodi, I asked about her father. She hadn’t spoken to him in years. She called him, and he said he had been waiting for her call.

Ladies, tell a man to share an amazing time and a difficult time with his dad.

You speak about the four practices Caring Science teaches and how they have transformed your life. What are they, and why are they beneficial to healthy relationships?

  1. Forgiveness: I had to forgive myself for my past and not bring it to my relationships
  2. Gratitude: Grateful to be alive and take time to be grateful for your relationship
  3. Surrender: Letting go of a need to control and trust
  4. Compassionate human service: Helps us be kind to anyone, not for what you can get from them but from what you can give

What are some practical ways men can ignite the power of women and bring romance back to a relationship?

Understand her love language. Ask how she likes to be cherished. Is it a text or flowers or going to her favorite restaurant?

What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?

Love is not what it says it’s what it does. Ask yourself, “How can  I love with no strings attached?”
