EP 547: Juliette Karaman – How to Overcome Body Shame

What is body shame, and why is it so prevalent today?

As a kid I went up and down in weight, and as a parent, I had four kids in three years. I gained a lot of weight, and even though I lost the weight, I wasn’t connecting to my body.

Body shame is being disconnected from your body. It’s about feeling bad about your body. With social media and filters, young people today are bombarded with these images. We compare ourselves to the ‘perfect’ body.

Who struggles the most with it?

Women post fifty after menopause, gravity takes its toll. But anyone who was ever criticized for their body will experience body shame.

How does it impact someone’s daily life?

It affects how people speak, dress, even their posture. It all impacts our lives.

How is it connected with trauma?

Trauma is anything that happens too quickly for our body or psyche to comprehend. It could be the way someone looked at you, whistled at you, or gave you a look and told you that you were asking for it. Or if someone touches you in a way that’s unhealthy. We numb out and keep the trauma inside.

What are some ways to begin to break free of body shame?

Realize you’re not in the past, you’re in the present. Notice the patterns and beliefs. Question whether it’s really true. I put a timer on four times a day for 90 seconds and took a breath in. I felt the temperature of my breath. Then I put my attention to my body, the emotions, and to feel my emotions and thoughts so I could move through them.

What are your final words of advice for anyone with body shame who wants to go on their last first date?

Find some sisters who you can be friends with and you can be yourself completely with them. Look at one part of your body and start loving it. It could be your fingertip, feeling it, feeling the sensations. You can increase what you’re grateful for every day. Identify which part of your body you’re grateful for. Give it some love.
