How did you come up with this concept of the Swipe Right Effect?
The Swipe Right Effect is a play on words. It’s about working on yourself before you date. I dated after my divorce before I did the work, and I just wanted to move on. Thanks to my friends I learned a lot. This book is all the advice from the last five years.
What type of inner work did you do to prepare for dating?
Getting unstuck starts with a choice to choose yourself. I did a vision board and it changed my life. Mine was a list of words that made me happy. Traveling with my kids, running in a new city, morning sex. These words empowered me to start envisioning my new life.
I also like self-love mantras, like “I am enough”.
Why did you decide to travel to the Camino Del Santiago to heal?
I had a friend, Bill, who I’ve known since I’m 19. About ten years before my marriage ended, he got divorced, and he had taken this walk. We had talked about it then. He had me watch the movie, The Way, produced by Emilio Esteves, which is about the Camino walk.
I was a marathon runner, but I had to start hiking in order to train for the walk. My friends would meet me for the walks, and some of the lessons in my book were learned there.
I knew my three daughters and my friends believed in me, and that was empowering. Everyone on the trail is on a spiritual journey.
What were some highlights of walking the Camino?
I met Tanya from South Africa. She had lost her husband, and we became friends quickly and walked almost the whole thing together. I learned to make space for people, to listen. Grief is like water. The more you spread it, the more it evaporates. That’s what happened to me.
What was your biggest takeaway from the Camino?
I forgave my husband and forgave myself for staying in a marriage that was killing me. I had been beating myself up, but I was able to see that I stayed for a reason.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
I want people to be happy. So many are stuck after COVID. I want everyone to feel empowered to make a choice to give yourself the gift of happiness.
