What’s your story of midlife love?
James: Midlife is often thought of as a crisis. We see it as a metamorphosis. Up until midlife, we’ve made a lot of sacrifices, and now we have a chance to start over. My wife left me in my 40s. Claire’s marriage broke up at the same time. I persevered and started dating Claire.
Claire: When I came to the relationship with James, I realized I had a whole other layer of work to do to nurture the relationship.
What’s your personal experience of reclaiming your midlife mojo?
James: I’ve always been into fitness, so when I was separated, I threw myself into exercise because it felt like something I could control. Many people stop taking care of their bodies and health after divorce. Start nourishing your body and it has an effect on your mind. I had to grieve first and then asked for help. I asked myself who I was and what I wanted to work on.
Claire: I never had fitness in my life. I was eating and drinking and on antidepressants. What shook me up was trying to get off pharmaceuticals. I started studying nutrition and exercising. Everything dropped into place. I dove into therapy and retreats and it changed my life.
How do you balance being a couple with working together?
Claire: It was a nightmare at first. I left my life in England to join James in his career in Ibiza. It was a battle of egos. I had to experience ego deaths, like not being as financially independent as I was before. We made an unconscious pact to be together against all odds and work through it all. We had the same values and vision. It’s also important to have time apart.
James: We had to learn about each other’s working styles and respect each other. You have to nurture a relationship. Remember you might be workmates, but you’re also partners and lovers.
What advice would you give to people who want to reclaim their mojo and get back into dating?
James: It starts with not rushing into relationships. Take the time to think about who you are now and who you want to be going forward. Start to love yourself. Stay fit and healthy. Have a gratitude practice.
Claire: It’s also about creating routines for yourself. Self-care routines build momentum to self-respect. When you’re in that energetic space, you’ll attract and be able to receive the next relationship.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
Claire: Own your own space, your place on this planet. Don’t go into dating feeling like someone needs to fill a hole you’re missing. Fill your energy up so when you go on your last first date, it will be amazing. Trust the universe that like attracts like.
James: Date yourself first and fall back in love with yourself.
