EP 581: Candice Horbacz – Consensual Non-Monogamy

Tell us about your career trajectory from adult entertainment performer to a field in health and wellness.

I followed my curiosity. I am wired to explore. I have a positive mindset and have learned to do things that align with who I am unapologetically.

What is consensual non-monogamy?

First, to bust a myth, women have agency to make decisions and not be taken advantage of in relationships. Consensual non-monogamy is a way to be in a relationship with additional partners. Everything is deeply communicated and agreed upon. In many cases, this leads to saving a relationship. Ultimately it’s what you both want.

What are the benefits, and how would someone open their relationship in this way?

It can save marriages if it’s done above board and you communicate openly and often.

What are the dangers of non-monogamy?

We have an idea that if we put up guard rails in a relationship, no one will get hurt. Being overbearing and controlling doesn’t work. Don’t be under that illusion that if you create rules, they won’t be broken. You have to know yourself on a deep level for all your abandonment issues not to come out. Ask yourselves why you want to open the relationship.

What are some other non-traditional or atypical relationship styles?

Polyamory, where there is one main partner and paramours on the side, is one of the most popular. Listen to the episode for the rules of polyamory.

What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?

Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. Don’t sacrifice that authenticity by hiding who you are.
