What are the most common questions you get from patients who struggle to maintain a healthy sex life?
The biggest misconception is that sex life is supposed to deteriorate with menopause. I try to dispel that myth and educate people on how to maintain a healthy sex life. I teach how to understand menopause. It’s a hormonal transition. It’s one year without a period. A lot of things change. In relation to sex, our anatomy changes. The vagina is estrogen dependent in terms of lubrication.
Is maintaining one’s libido an emotional, mental or physical problem for women? How do these affect someone’s sex life and relationship?
All three – emotional, mental and physical. The vagina produces less lubrication. I am a medical advisor for a lubrication company, Playground. It’s designed by women keeping women’s bodies in mind. Don’t push through the pain, or you’ll associate pain with sex. Use a good quality lubricant that supports your PH.
A lot of your patients express concern about arousal. Is this common and what can we do about it?
Arousal is complex. It’s physical, emotional, psychological, and mental. For women going through perimenopause and menopause, there’s a lot of change going on. A partner can be aware of the changes and discuss how to support and explore together.
You’ve said that personal lubricants should be as essential as skincare. You’ve compared it to moisturizer. Is it really the same for a woman’s vagina and intimate area?
Definitely. It’s so important to lubricate with lubricants that have the right PH balance.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
Self care and self appreciation are very important. Seek out what it is that you want. Don’t take no for an answer when it comes to sexual health post-menopause.
