Older women who are dating younger men are more satisfied in their relationships, according to a survey of 200 heterosexual couples by Dr. Justin J. Lehmiller. The Bias Against Older Women Age-Gap Relationships
Older women who date younger men are often called cougars, which implies a predatory nature, but there are no derogatory labels for younger men who enter these relationships.
This bias against these types of age-gap relationships helps explain why they’re relatively rare. Lack of support or criticism by society or friends and family can put stress on the relationship or deter a couple from considering it at all.
The Quality of Age-Gap Relationships
In spite of the stigma associated with these types of relationships, research shows that women who were more than 10 years older than their male partners were the most satisfied with and committed to their relationships compared with women who were younger than their partners and women whose partners were close in age.
We can see many examples of these relationships among celebrities. Cher, 77, is dating a man 40 years her junior. Heidi Klum, 50, is married to a musician who’s 16 years her junior. Mariah Carey, 54, is partnered with a 39-year-old choreographer. If it works for them, why can’t it work for you?
