5 First Date Questions That Spark Connection

first date questions

What first date questions should you ask if you want to leave a lasting impression? Here are the only 5 you’ll need!

Recently, a client asked, “What type of questions can I ask on a first date to see if we share the same values? I always struggle with this.” If you’ve ever been at a loss for what to say on a first date, you’re not alone. I’m sharing five of my favorite first date questions and conversation starters. This is how they’ll benefit you:

  • You’ll be able to tell early on whether you have a connection
  • You’ll get to know their values and areas of compatibility more quickly
  • You’ll spark more engaging conversations, whether there’s a true connection or not

Ask one or two of these first date questions on your date, and the conversation should begin to flow. You can also use a few on a first phone call to see if you even want to go on a first date!

5 First Date Questions That Spark Connection

1. What do you love most about your career? This is a good way to find out what they do for a living, but without the boring “I’m a lawyer” “I’m an accountant” answer. Asking them what they LOVE about their work will get to the heart of why they chose this career. And if they say they don’t love it, ask what they’d rather be doing instead.

2. What does a typical day look like for you? You’ll learn about their morning and evening routines, what they do before and after work, whether they eat healthy, exercise, read, watch TV. This opens up a bigger conversation about their lifestyle, which will help you learn whether you’re compatible.

3. What types of vacations do you like best? This will help you know more about their values – what they spend money on and how they spend their leisure time. And there’s scientific research that found that 18% of couples who talked about travel on a first date went on a second date, as compared with only 9% who talked about movies.

4. What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you? This question will help you learn about what type of advice they value, which says a lot about who they are.

5. What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever done? I don’t know about you, but I am drawn to people who get out of their comfort zone on a regular basis to grow and stretch who they are. Asking about what they did that was brave is a window into whether they do courageous things or they’re happy living a safer and less emotionally risky life.

By sharing personal and emotional experiences on your first date, you will have more interesting and exciting dates. You’ll get to know your dates more quickly so you spend less time wondering if the connection is worth another date. And don’t forget to prepare your answers to the questions you ask, so you’re prepared with awesome responses that show your true nature.
