Are Dating Apps in Their Flop Era?
Are dating apps soon to be a thing of the past? Are they in their flop era? Here are my thoughts about dating apps today.

Are dating apps in their flop era? There’s been a lot of talk in the news lately about the decline of dating apps, and some have even been sued for their addictive nature. Are dating apps a thing of the past? Maybe. The apps are going through a crisis of public perception. People are feeling done with the whole thing. Let’s discuss!
Are Dating Apps in Their Flop Era?
I’ve been using dating apps off-and-on for the past five years. I’m finding the selection to be worse than ever, and bad dating behavior – ghosting, bread-crumbing, slow fading – is at an all time high. Hinge, Tinder, Raya and Bumble have reached their lowest levels of engagement ever. Why?
Four reasons dating apps in their flop era
1. Dating app stocks have dropped. Last November, Whitney Wolfe Herd, Bumble’s founder and CEO, stepped down after 10 years. Bumble’s stocks have plummeted and they’ve fired a large number of staff members. Match Group, which owns Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, and OkCupid, has seen their stock price drop by 40 per cent. And they’ve been sued for their addictive nature. The apps are in a serious decline.
2. Dating fatigue. We’re tired of the endless swiping, flaky messaging, and dates that don’t lead to a true connection. As one viral TikToker said: “If you met your partner on a dating app two years ago, you caught the last chopper out of ‘Nam.”
3. You have to pay to play. One of the most frustrating things about dating apps is they make you think all the best matches are locked behind a paywall. On Hinge, they have a section called “Standouts”. You can send one rose a week to Standouts or buy more roses to send to more people, who probably won’t respond anyway. On Bumble, they hide people in your “Beeline”, people who already liked you or are your supposed best matches. You have to pay to see them. The apps are limiting your reach on purpose so you pay for the access you had before. You may – or may not – increase your chances of finding your match. That’s why most people don’t pay. It can get quite expensive.
4. Dating apps are based on quick judgments. Many people swipe so quickly, they’re not even sure why they swiped right and left on someone. However, many forget that a profile is not a person. Many wonderful matches have been made with people who posted bad photos and hardly had anything written in their bio.
It’s understandable why so many people are losing interest in dating apps, but we need to remember the benefits. We’re meeting people we would never have met in real life. And it only takes one good match to fall in love, and that can take time. It also takes skill.
Five ways to improve your dating app experience
1. Change your mindset. Instead of going into dating hoping to find ‘the one’, go in with the mindset of learning from each encounter. You’ll feel better about every date, and you’ll grow in the process.
2. Take dating breaks. If you feel tired or frustrated with dating apps, take a break. Practice self care, and return to the apps when you feel excited about dating again. And limit your time on the apps to no more than 20 minutes a day to prevent burnout.
3. Try a new app or dating site. If you’re not having good luck with one app, try another. You never know if your match is already on the next app you download.
4. Open up your preferences. Changing a few preferences can help you find your match. For example, if your app is set to five miles distance from home, change it to 30. If your height preference is set to 6′ and over, change it to 5’9. You might have missed your match by five miles or two inches!
5. Spruce up your profile. Add new pics, and write a bio that expresses your quirks and unique qualities. When most profiles are using tired cliches or have nothing written, you’ll stand out if you improve your pics and bio.
Dating apps may be on the decline, but they’re here to stay – at least for the foreseeable future. So, follow these five tips, and you’ll be closer to going on your last first date!
