Dating myths can keep us from finding love. Have you ever been told to wait three days before texting or calling after a date? Or that you should be searching for your twin flame or “the one” (because there’s only one right person for each of us)?
If you study the science behind dating and romance, you’ll learn that many of these myths and rules are based on complete misconceptions. That’s why I’m debunking 6 common – and uncommon – dating myths!
6 Common Dating Myths Debunked – You Won’t Believe #3!
#1. Dating is a numbers game
If you treat dating like a numbers game, you will quickly burn out. After a while, you’re just going through the motions, trying to give too many people a chance. And all that energy spent on dating numerous people means you’re probably not showing up as your best, and your dates can feel it.
Instead, I recommend you try slow dating. Check out this video to learn more.
#2. First date sparks are a must
If you’re looking for that instant spark, those butterflies, you’re prioritizing chemistry over compatibility. That means you sometimes move on too quickly from a potential match. Romantic love develops in different ways and there’s a lot to be said for a slow and steady approach.
Instead of seeking instant chemistry, which usually crashes and burns, I recommend you rely less on chemistry and more on compatibility. If you’ve had a good time and felt a connection on the first date but you aren’t sure how attracted you are, consider a second date. If you still can’t imagine ever kissing them, it may be time to move on.
The spark you’re looking for can grow over time. In fact, 54% of singles say they have fallen in love with someone they weren’t initially attracted to. Value connection and compatibility over chemistry and see if the attraction grows.
#3. Men take longer to fall in love
This myth leads to misunderstandings about love. Sex and Relationship Coach Jordan Gray says that men usually fall in love faster at the beginning of a relationship and fall out of love slower after a break up than women. It’s also important to remember that most men are not encouraged to show their emotions when they’re growing up. So, even if they do feel strongly about the woman they’re dating, they may not show it, which leads to this myth that men take longer to fall in love.
If you want to increase intimacy and connection, be more vulnerable when you’re dating. Co-create a safe space for emotions to be shared, and you’ll be able to see how a man really feels about you, instead of believing this myth about men.
#4. Men don’t want to date successful women
So many successful women believe men are intimidated by them. Not true. 87% of single men polled by Match.com said they would consider dating someone with a successful career, even if these women make more money than their partner. And 44% think it’s very important that the woman they date have a successful career.
The men who don’t want to date successful women are often insecure. Or the successful women they’ve dated have been so career-focused, they’ve neglected their partner. As you can see, this is not a black or white issue, and successful women can find love!
#5. Women should never ask men out
There’s an outdated myth that men love to chase, and if a woman asks a man out, he will lose interest. However, that’s not true today. In fact, 90% of single men polled by Match.com are completely comfortable being asked out by a woman.
So ladies, if you feel like asking a man out, do it. If you don’t ask, you will never know if he’s interested! Many successful relationships began with a woman asking a man out.
#6. Opposites attract
Sometimes opposites do attract, but more often, it’s our similarities that connect and draw us to our partners. Unfortunately, many people who believe this myth seek out partners who are such opposites, they are incompatible, and that brings more heartache than joy.
