In your latest book, She Who Wins, you say women come out on top post-divorce. Tell us more about that.
I noticed a trend where women often make the decision to get divorced. They’re pushed to a breaking point and realize they need a change. When they leave the marriage, they just want peace and to not walk on eggshells. They’re ready to take care of themselves and be by themselves. Many men say they feel blindsided by women initiating divorce and they jump right into a new relationship before they’re ready.
How do women typically navigate and adjust to life after divorce?
Women are good problem solvers and are able to adjust well. Men often feel lost without their wives. It’s because women are often the caretakers and men are often not used to the roles.
How do you help women grappling with uncertainty, helping them determine whether divorce is the right path for them?
- I ask them to turn off their head and tap into their inner knowing. Pay attention to that. I ask them, “If your daughter came to you with the exact same relationship, would you tell her to stay?”
- Then, drop your excuses. This is where people live for years – when the house is paid off, when the kids move out, etc.
- Roll into action: Take the smallest step forward to move the process along.
Why are women more proactive in seeking assistance to heal from the emotional challenges faced during a tumultuous marriage?
I think women are better at asking for help. They realize they can’t do it on their own and many men feel a stigma about asking for support.
What are some of your key tips for women who are navigating divorce?
Tip #1: Choose a process before you choose a lawyer.
Determine whether mediation or the collaborative process is appropriate for your situation and then find a lawyer who practices in this manner.
Tip #2: Remove the emotion from your decision-making process.
For example, most people want to keep their home because it is an emotional attachment and they end up house poor. Instead, make the decision as if it was a business decision.
Tip #3: Go dark on social media.
If you don’t want a judge to see it, don’t post it.
Tip #4: Keep a diary.
Write down everything that you think might be important to your case, including dates so you have an accurate record. Don’t wait until your lawyer asks you for details and then try and recreate a timeline and details.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date post-divorce?
Be very open and honest about your needs and non-negotiables. Ask him to be honest with who he is, too. And don’t pretend to be someone you’re not.
