What are some of the biggest challenges in dating later in life?
We’re wounded and have been through a lot. We have baggage. Be aware of your wounds and work through them. We have walls up. If you grew up in a family with dysfunction or trauma, or you grew up in a family where nothing was being dealt with honestly or openly, it’s important to learn how to talk about emotions.
What are some of the advantages to dating later in life?
There are so many advantages to dating later in life. We’re more emotionally mature, can communicate better, we’re less superficial. We can have the best relationships when we’re older.
Are there strategies or best practices that can help us date more effectively?
Know what you’re looking for and be upfront about that. If you want a committed relationship, express that and ask what they’re looking for. Look for emotional intelligence or the willingness to grow emotionally. This is about being aware of what you’re feeling and being able to regulate and express your emotions. If you meet someone who’s not so emotionally developed, ask if they’re open to talking about what they feel and need.
What are the most important qualities to look for in a partner?
Growth mindset, someone willing to be honest and transparent from the beginning, shares their history and pain points early on, talks about personal growth and takes responsibility for their mistakes, consistency and reliability. Pay attention early on to green and red flags. A relationship should feel safe, reliable, and consistent. Be the green flag you’re looking for.
What are your final words of advice for anyone who wants to go on their last first date?
Tell people the truth about your life. Don’t play games. There are good people out there. It can take some time to find them. It’s worth the wait and work. Stay hopeful. And take risks to get the reward. Put yourself out there!
